illustration friday - "farm"

sorry i've been so absent lately. i've been busy the past couple of weeks, since i decided to transfer schools so late in the summer. so i had to really scramble to get everything done. now everything is in order, so i should be posting fairly regularly again. well, except i'm taking 20.5 credits this semester, and i'm getting married in a month. so maybe not that regularly.

i have now completed the project, although as i sit here in the radio station, my OCD-sense is telling me that i almost definitely did not frame one of the drawings. i am starting to freak out a little, because if it is not sitting on the scanner bed at home, then i may have lost it somewhere. and i don't have a frame for it. that is, unless i already framed it, and i'm just being crazy. in any case, there isn't anything i can do about it right now. so here are some sketches from joo's class:


i've really been going heavy on the purple ink lately. thanks to doug, who gave it to me.

the last of it

pretty much the last of it, anyway. i've got to add text and such to some, but for the most part, the drawings are done:



i've got 36 total, and given the fact that several of them have been redone two or three times, i probably did at least sixty, all in all. i'm one frame short, i need glass or plexi for many of them, and i still have to clean and paint all of the frames.

everybody wants something, they never give up

here are some more works from the cambodia project. it's the home stretch, so i'm gonna try to churn out at least 15-20 over spring break. i found some awful photographs, i don't even know if i can do them or not.

anyway, here's what i have for now:


the last one is going to be a postcard, with the lettering and all, and i'm going to do the reverse side as well, with postage and such. it'll be a random tourist's reflections of what he or she noticed while visiting cambodia, based on things i've gathered from a few people who have been there.

more cambodia work

here are the latest cambodia drawings. well, one you've seen before, but i added text. and the khieu samphan one is old, but i never scanned it until today.


we brought everything in today, and tom didn't have anything bad to say, really. he only suggested that perhaps i should paint all of the frames the same color. i'm thinking either a neutral color or white. white's good, because it'll be hung on a white wall, and the frames will sort of fade out and leave the pictures as the focus. any color suggestions? or does anyone think i should leave them as they are?

so i'm really glad the snow came this week, and not last week when i was hobbling around on a cane. there's new stuff here, as you can see. the first one is a cambodia portrait, the next three are from joo's class today, and the last is just a random bit of nonsense:

well i somehow ended up on the wrong side of the law again with tom. i'm not sure what i did that was so bad this week, but you be the judge...




he did suggest making a numbered tag for each picture with an explanation or quote on the back, which i'm considering. i also like the idea (alternately) of a diagram of the layout, with maybe a line about each picture underneath the diagram.


painting light is kicking my ass too, what with having to learn how to use oil paint again. i hate you, oil paint! you are messy and toxic and you will not dry fast enough, damn you! *months later, i am loving the oil paint.

more cambodia project

tom's not giving me a hard time anymore, but he seems to be a little concerned for my mental health. at the same time, he wants me to get a bit more personal as i go on with this. lucky for me, i was headed in that direction anyway. at least i think i was. will be. or something.

progress and regression

for some reason my apartment smells like diapers. anyway, here's some new drawings for my project. woodruff is pretty much hating it so far, and so is the rest of the class for that matter. apparently the pictures are "too pretty" to deal with the subject of torture. so, do i have to dumb down and make philip guston drawings? i'm really stuck as to how to appease everybody else with this thing, so i'm just going to keep making things the way i make them. i usually have a pretty thick skin when it comes to criticism, but i kind of flipped out in class the other day, especially when someone said, "i mean, i don't really care what happened in cambodia, so i don't really get what you're trying to do with this..." what can i say to that? i wanted to spark discussion with this project, but this is fucking ridiculous. all i seem to be getting in the way of "helpful" criticism is, "hey, maybe you could do life-size, full-body portraits or huge historical battle-scene paintings or anything other than the type of pictures you want to make."oh well. you can't please everybody, right? i guess in this case, i can't please anybody. anyway, here's the pictures:
